Disney Dream Arrives at Port Canaveral
Cruising is alive and well on the Space Coast! The
Disney Dream™, the largest luxury liner in the Disney Cruise Line fleet, arrived in Florida amid much fanfare and a display of fireworks. The new ship docked on January 4 at its new home port of Port Canaveral after making a 6,500-mile cross-Atlantic journey from Bremen, Germany, where it was built.
The
Disney Dream™ is the third vessel in the Disney fleet of cruise ships. The 130,000-ton Dream, which undertakes its maiden voyage to the Bahamas on January 26, boasts several cruise industry firsts, including a top-deck water coaster. Boasting 14 towering decks, a ship length of 1,115 feet and a maximum width of 125 feet, the vessel includes 1,250 staterooms and has the capacity to comfortably accommodate 4,000 passengers—along with the over 1,458 crew members who tend to the needs of every guest. By comparison, sister ships Disney Magic and Disney Wonder, both weigh in at 83,000 tons and hold up to 2,400 guests each.
Another unique feature of the Dream are “magic portholes” in the inside staterooms that project real-time views of the outside of the ship via high-definition cameras—with the occasional Disney character popping up in the window. The ship’s water coaster, AquaDuck, is a high-speed flume with twists, turns, drops and rapids that is close to 800-feet long and utilizes powerful water blasters to propel riders along its course.
After preview sails leading up to its official christening, the Dream will commence three-, four- and five-night cruises to the Bahamas and Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island which has recently been enhanced to accommodate more guests.
Another Disney cruise vessel, the Disney Fantasy, is currently under construction and will sail the Caribbean from Port Canaveral beginning in early 2012.
Building on the style and tradition of the previous two ships, the
Disney Magic and the
Disney Wonder, the Disney Dream is a valiant vessel distinguished for its classic early 20th-century design—which harkens back to the golden age of cruising—and state-of-the-art technology. As can be expected from Disney, the cruise liner was specially designed with families in mind, with splashes of magic and the wonder that has come to be expected from the Disney legacy.
